Christmas Oratorio (December 9th)

The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and The Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, with soloists and conductor Peter Dijkstra invites you to this concert where we will perform Cantatas no. 1, 2, 3 and 6 from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. The three first cantatas tell the birth story of Christ, as it is written in the 2nd chapter of Luke’s Gospel, verses 1-20, in the new testament. The 6th cantata tells the story of when the three wise men came to see the new born Christ.

The Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is one of Bach’s most frequently performed sacred works. Although, it is not as much regarded as an oratorio in the traditional sense, as it is a cycle of six cantatas written for the Christmas feast days. The three first cantatas belong to the main Christmas feast days; December 25th, 26th and 27th respectively. The 4th cantata was written for new years day, number 5 for the first sunday of the new year, and the 6th one for January 6th, or what we call The Three Kings day.

03.21.: Händel: Jephta – Oslo Church Music Festival

Handel’s monumental oratorio tells the dramatic story of passion, salvation, sacrifice, renunciation, faith and doubt. The Israelites are oppressed by the neighboring Ammonites and select Jephtha as their commander in a war against this enemy. Jephtha promises God that if he wins the war he will sacrifice the first human being to meet him when he comes home. Israel wins, but Jephtha’s happiness is short lived when he meets his daughter and only child Ifis, when he returns home. She is therefore the sacrifice Jephtha promised God, and in spite of doubt and remorse, he decides to keep his promise. This work examines the consequences of a promise that cannot be broken, and a faith so strong that a person is willing to carry out unthinkable acts. It is both the individual and group relationship with God that George Friedrich Handel’s musical drama highlights, with a particular focus on the individual. The plot of the oratorio is a revised, expanded and modernized dramatization of the story of Jephtha: While the original story ends in a tragic human sacrifice, the treatment in the oratorio Jephtha offers a more humane outcome. The work is a testament to the aging Handel’s artistic brilliance, but also carries heart-rending traces of Handel’s failing health. On one of the pages of the original score Handel wrote: “Unable to go on owing to weakening of the sight of my left eye.” Jephtha was finally completed after several interruptions and was the last work of importance that Handel was able to complete before his death in 1759.
