Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992) is considered one of the leading composers of the 20th century. Cinq rechants from 1949 is the last part of the composer's trilogy based on the legendary story of Tristan and Isolde. 27th April 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the death of Olivier Messiaen.
"This piece should work like a love potion", said Messiaen about Cinq Rechants - quoting stories from myths, fairy-tales and folk stories.
The piece is an ultimate vocal expression of passion, sexuality and fear. The text is based on a mix of French and a made up language that Messiaen created because he could not find words that would express the strong feelings that he wanted to convey.
